Speakeasy Scratch Night: Change

Next date: Tuesday, 29 April 2025 | 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM

A group of people sitting in chairs, some holding laptops, gather in a semi-circle inside a room.

Our second Darebin Arts Speakeasy Company in Residence, the voice in my hands (VIMH) will be using their residency to think about utopias, and YOU are invited to be part of this imagining.

This community-centred scratch night of performance and conversation will unpack the concept of change and its potential in artmaking, storytelling and future-building.

The night will feature artists who have a bite-sized work-in-progress that they want to share with kind eyes and smart brains to receive feedback and to spark generative conversations around the horizons that we might build together.

Please join us with an open heart and an open mind (and check out the Running Time info below to get a feel of how the evening will be run).

Content Warnings

This is a night of works in progress. The content may include coarse language and adult themes.

Running Time

This event will run for approximately two hours and will include a mix of performance excerpts, opportunities for silent reflection, and conversations between audience members facilitated by VIMH co-Artistic Directors Liv and Jules in response to the ideas presented around concepts of 'change'.

This framework of collective thinking that will be developed across the evening is strictly opt-in - if you just want to support a friend by sitting up the back, that's completely okay too!

There will be space to get up and move around, and to take breaks as and when you need.

What is a Scratch Night?

Speakeasy Scratch Nights are a new monthly sharing platform for artists to test out new works-in-development on a live and generous audience of likeminded artists. This is an open access, inclusive, messy, supportive and celebratory space for artists to take risks and connect across the community.

The Speakeasy Scratch Nights are hosted and curated by our Companies in Residence, with different themes and curatorial approaches each time.

Come along to experience live performance experiments and be part of our community of practice, or follow us on Instagram to find out how to get involved.

About the voice in my hands

the voice in my hands (VIMH) is a Darebin-based theatre company focussed on new work development and support for independent artists, led by Co-Artistic Directors Julian Dibley-Hall and Liv Satchell. VIMH is well-known for their community gathering practice, creating open access opportunities where experimentation feels safe and practice is rigorous and inclusive. They were instrumental to Small and Loud, a popular and long-running scratch night that ran in various venues across Melbourne prior to the pandemic.
