Prize Fighter by Future D. Fidel

Two Black men box with an audience looking on.

Presented by Darebin Arts Speakeasy and Melbourne International Arts Festival, in association with La Boite Theatre and Brisbane Festival

Get ringside for a rare theatrical combo: engrossing storytelling paired with the visceral thrill of live boxing.

Fleeing the Congo as a child, playwright Future D. Fidel lived in a Tanzanian refugee camp for eight years before being granted refugee status in Australia. Prize Fighter is inspired by his own story and those of the people he has known.

Isa is a young Congolese boxer blazing an impressive career between the ropes. Gearing up for the national title fight, he soon discovers it’s not just his opponents he has to outdo, but the demons from his tortuous past as a boy soldier.

Prize Fighter is adrenaline-pumping, full-contact theatre at its best.

Age Suitability

Reviews

“The most perfectly structured, brilliantly produced and best-acted new play…Stunning blow from one-time boy soldier” - The Australian

“The cast is superb, generating an electrifying physical energy that catches fire in the audience, who cheer throughout, just as they might in a stadium, unless they are rendered absolutely silent by one of its moments of theatrical beauty.” - ABC News

“There's a breathtaking authenticity to the action - punches are thrown, sweat flies, the audience cheers as loudly and freely as an actual boxing match. The irony of this realism is that Prize Fighter isn't really about boxing at all.” - The Music

“In the 65 thrilling minutes that make up Prize Fighter, Future D. Fidel manages to say more about our world and internal lives than many playwrights do in a lifetime.” - Daily Review

“There are so many show to see in the festival, but this feels like one you shouldn't miss.” - Sydney Morning Herald

“This production is thrilling and the subject matter, while tough and unforgiving as bullets, is equally so. Absolutely not to be missed.” - Stage Noise

“Prize Fighter is, in every respect, theatre that matters.” - ABC Arts

“Excellent theatre” - ArtsHub

“Powerful beyond all measure” - XS Entertainment

About La Boite Theatre Company

"THEATRE THAT MATTERS”

La Boite holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of artists and audiences in Brisbane. For more than 90 years La Boite has represented the adventurous and alternative. There has always been a strong focus on the development of new work and artists, and today it is no different. The stories, ideas and voices of our city and country are many and varied and as such La Boite seeks to represent and engage in this beautiful and rich diversity; the diversity of form, of ideas, ethnicity, gender – of identity.

La Boite presents five productions annually, and delivers a comprehensive Artist-in-Residence program, and new development program La Boite HWY to develop diverse new work, and Youth & Participation programs for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Theatre has the capacity to embrace difference in so many ways. We push the boundaries of form by collaborating with some extraordinary partners to stretch theatrical, physical and musical boundaries. We play with contemporary circus, opera, classical text, the theatrical and extraordinary international talents. This varied menu aims to enliven and inspire our existing audiences and draw new audiences to share in the La Boite experience – the experience and magic of live performance in our unique Roundhouse Theatre.
