Djuna by Eva Rees

Next date: Wednesday, 12 March 2025 | 07:30 PM to 09:00 PM

The word Djuna written out in red thick jam with shattered glass pieces scattered on a white backdrop.

Presented by Darebin Arts Speakeasy and Bullet Heart Club

A razor-sharp trans thriller

“Nervous? How could you not be?”

From the cutting-edge queer theatremakers that brought Melbourne The Inheritance, In The Club and The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven comes a razor-sharp new collaboration with trans playwright Eva Rees. A taught psychological thriller with a twinge of body horror, Djuna toys with power, kink and gender politics between two strangers behind closed doors.

Djuna meets Marcus to play out a mutual fantasy. She's definitely lying about her age, and he's clearly in denial about who he is and what he wants.

Djuna and Marcus have more in common than they might admit: a desire to explore themselves in ways they can't anywhere else. This night will be the beginning of a two-year affair that will leave neither of them unscathed.

Directed by Kitan Petkovski, with production design by Bethany J Fellows (In the Club) and sound and video by James Paul (Wake in Fright), Djuna offers a scintillating perspective on queer exploration, from a ground-breaking local company.

"Eva Rees’ characters thrive in a messy and dark emotional landscape of humanity. The team at Bullet Heart Club were immediately drawn to the complexity of Eva’s characters, who exist within a genre that we don’t often get to play with in the theatre – body horror. We’re thrilled to collaborate on the world premiere of this dangerously good script, by an exceptionally intelligent writer". - Bullet Heart Club

About the Artists

Eva Rees (Playwright) originated the role of Albus Potter in the Melbourne production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Having grown up around performers, she has worked extensively in film, theatre, voiceover and TV: appearing in her first feature Jindabyne in 2007, and working as a series regular in the ABC3 show Nowhere Boys. Eva performed in the Malthouse immersive show Hour of the Wolf in October 2023.

Bullet Heart Club (BHC) is a theatre company established in 2013 by writer Ro Bright (they/them) and director Kitan Petkovski (he/him). Based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand) and Naarm (Melbourne, Australia), the duo come together to create ever-evolving passion projects that are emotionally “dark, beautiful and complex” (Pantograph Punch). Inspired by cinema, pop culture and queer aesthetics, BHC collaborates with like-minded independent multidisciplinary and recording artists from Aotearoa New Zealand, England, Scotland, Sweden, Australia and the US. BHC’s projects are often inspired by true stories, and more recently created in collaboration with transgender and gender-nonconforming artists, activists and survivors.

In 2023, BHC will present two works at the Midsumma Festival: An Hour with Queen Jesus by Jo Clifford and the Australasian premiere of Burgerz by Travis Alabanza. BHC co-presented with Theatre Works the Victorian premiere of In the Club by one of Australia's most renowned playwrights Patricia Cornelius.

BHC’s debut work Daffodils (a play with songs) received the Auckland Theatre Award (2014), Best Debut (Metro, 2014), Top 10 Shows at the Edinburgh Festivals (Irish Times, 2016) and the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award (2016) during its season at the Traverse Theatre. Daffodils was adapted into a feature film in 2019, screening at Busan International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, Melbourne Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival & Naples International Film Festival Florida.

"Packs a serious punch, wrapped in a bubblegum glove." ★ ★ ★ ★ (The Scotsman)

BHC’s other works are Jack Hartnett (2015), Elizabeth (2017-2018), A Strange Nostalgia (2020) and The Hall (2021) at the Festival of Colour in Wanaka, NZ.

BHC collaborators include: designers Bethany J Fellows (AU), Katie Sfetkidis (AU), Jane and Emily Hakaraia (NZ), Garth Badger and Erin Geurts (Thievery Studio, NZ), Nils Melchert (NZ), Dan Williams (NZ) and Tom Anderson (NZ); recording artists/composers Lips (Steph Brown & Fen Ikner, NZ), Pat Irwin (SUSS, Raybeats, The B-52’s, US), LHĒON (AU), Abraham Kunin (NZ), Lisa Crawley (NZ/US), Pär Hagström and Next Stop: Horizon (Sweden), Rachel Lewindon (AU) and dramaturg Caitlin Skinner (Scotland).
