Urinetown is a wildly funny, sharp-edged musical satire about power, greed and the politics of public toilets. In a Gotham-like city crippled by a 20-year drought, private toilets are banned and citizens must pay to use public amenities controlled by a corrupt corporation. As the poor are squeezed for profit, one unlikely hero rises up to challenge the system and lead a revolt. Winner of multiple Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards, Urinetown skewers capitalism, bureaucracy, populism, environmental collapse, privatisation, the legal system and musical theatre itself. Inspired by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, it is both gloriously absurd and unexpectedly honest. Irreverent, outrageous and razor-smart, Urinetown is a comedic revolt that will leave audiences laughing hard — and thinking twice about the everyday freedoms they take for granted.
