Next date: Sunday, 14 September 2025 | 02:30 PM to 04:30 PM

A collage of young Asian musicians, three of which are holding the neck of a violin, cello or viola in the frame.

The Preston Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition is a chance to hear the dazzling virtuosity of young musical talent at its best. The highly regarded competition – now in its 38th year – gives selected finalists the opportunity to perform and rehearse with a full symphony orchestra. This year’s contestants include pianists, violinists and cellists aged 18 and under who will each perform a concerto movement. The program features works by Mozart, Rachmaninov, Saint-Saëns, Lalo, Elgar and Schumann. The conductor is Carlos del Cueto, fresh from a triumphant opera season with Orchestra Victoria. The winner is selected by a leading figure from Melbourne’s music world – with everyone casting a vote for the Audience Prize at the end of the concert.
