Six extraordinary young musicians appear with the Preston Symphony Orchestra for the 37th annual Youth Concerto Competition.
This competition is open to solo instrumentalists aged 18 and under. Applications opened in April, attracting entrants from across Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand and finalists were chosen by audition to perform with the orchestra.
This year the finalists range in age from 13 to 17. The concert includes piano concertos by Chopin and Grieg and the clarinet features in the Weber Clarinet Concerto no.2. The Double Bass Concerto no.2 by Bottesini is also included, as well as a contemporary marimba concerto by Golovko and the Sibelius Violin Concerto. The concert will be conducted by David Le Guen. The compere will be Amanda Smith the radio presenter, and the Mayor of Darebin will present the prizes.
