Digital Fantasy is a survey of self through Y2K nostalgia and adolescence in the digital age. Using oil painting, low-fi video, and hand-painted ceramics, Chira Grasby explores her associations with early 2000s internet culture.

Her works are informed by meme culture, digital ephemera, and memory. She paints on unconventional surfaces such as circuit boards and computer parts. Drawing out a contrast between traditional oil painting and contemporary digital hardware. Many of her works are inspired by design movements like Frutiger Aero, which combined imagery from nature and technology in glossy, dream-like compositions. She also references social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace, which were prominent platforms in the 2010s.

As a neurodivergent individual, Grasby dissects her consumption of mass-produced media and exposure to visual overstimulation. She queries her nostalgia for these forms of digital media, considering their influence on her since childhood.

About the artist

Chiranjika (Chira) Grasby is an artist and curator working on Kaurna Yerta.

Her practice incorporates painting, illustration, sculpture and video. Her work is informed by her lived experience of cultural disconnect as a Queer person from the Asian diaspora. This is represented in her works through melancholic depictions of mundane daily imagery. Her work explores the personal impact of internet culture and the spread of digital technology through a neurodivergent lens.
