Bundoora Homestead History Tours
Join us for our history tours, with monthly interchangeable themes attend one or both! This unique guided experience explores the stories that shaped Bundoora Homestead, a convalescent farm for returned servicemen and a repatriation mental hospital for over 70 years.
Theme 1: Guided History Tours: The Hospital Years 1920-1993
Ex Bundoora Repatriation Hospital staff members Rosemary Barnes and Arnold Wheeler will engage visitors with stories and facts about this multi layered site, the home of a major internationally significant medical discovery. Not to be missed!
Theme 2: Bundoora Homestead Early History: The Smith Family 1899 – 1920
Join us to learn about the first period of Bundoora Homestead’s history, the design and commissioning of this magnificent mansion. Built in 1900, Bundoora Homestead was originally a family home for John Matthew Vincent Smith, a leader in the horse breeding and racing industry. Designed by Sydney Herbert Wilson, Bundoora Homestead was a 14 room, two story mansion and an exceptional example of Queen Anne architecture. Explore the original features of this prestigious family home and learn the unique stories of this piece of local history.
