Bell: Rose Dawn Story
Local artist turns a major infrastructure redevelopment into an exciting art project.
Rose, (like everyone in Melbourne) was in lockdown in 2020 and 2021, living in an apartment overlooking Bell Station, Preston.
When the level crossing removal project started in 2021, she decided to embrace the noise and mess by taking an active interest in the construction process. A once in a lifetime infrastructure project was unfolding before Rose’s eyes and she had a front row seat. What else to do but document it?
A great deal of time was spent observing, photographing and distilling interesting aspects of the construction site, enabling Rose to create representational work that tends toward abstraction.
Her art demonstrates a fascination with the processes, engineering, machinery and people involved in building a large piece of infrastructure. Rose recorded this project as an historical event in the infrastructure of the city.
