These works are outcomes of an ongoing project developed along the Birrarung and Merri Merri in Narrm/Melbourne. The project began by looking at the physical confluence of these two waterways and has expanded to consider the coming together and merging of forms and flows of (post) colonialism that play out against the faux-natural remnants of Melbourne’s urbanisation.
This project was developed through exploring non-indigenous relation to place and connection to land in light of our/my ontological origins and continued complicity in the ongoing process of colonisation. The show is based on the consideration of introduced elements within the urban and re-naturalised environment in light of their roles in the maintenance of the waterways and surrounding parklands of the Merri Merri area. The intention behind this work is to visually engage with the legacy of settler colonial land use in South-Eastern Australia and to highlight how these legacies have been embedded within our contemporary experience of the urban and semi-urban landscape.
