Darebin Arts Speakeasy
Announcing our 2022 season of shows!
The Speakeasy program
What's happening this year?
We are thrilled to share a full season of COVID safe shows ahead. Throughout 2022 you’ll see shows that were created for a 2020 and 2021 release, when covid hit, and some that we are quietly brewing behind the scenes.
Jam-packed with provocative, contemporary and powerful shows about the world we find ourselves in today, and created by award winning artists from across the country, this season is going to be a cracker.
July - October events:
Paradise Lost | 20 - 30 July - A satirical adaptation about the narcissism of creation and our fading hope for the future. Appropriate for ages 15+.
Rhythmic Fictions | 10 - 14 August - Five dance performers negotiate communicating with each other and the audience whilst attending to the complex rhythmic world in which they operate.
Of Frogs | 7 - 17 September - A contemporary ritual performance of the life cycle of frogs, forgotten waterways and lost springs.
Batsh*t | 5 - 15 October - Strapped in, belted up and dressed to kill, psycho siren Leah Shelton dredges through history to unravel the histories, hypocrisies and conundrums of female madness.
March - June events:
Let's Take Over | 5 March - What happens when young creative people are given the keys to Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre to produce a one-day arts festival? It's a takeover!
No More Sugar, No More Tea | 26-30 April - An original opera exploring the changes that take place when life is decimated by war: people become fringe dwellers, homeless, impoverished and cultural authority is smashed to pieces.
Security | 25 May - 4 June - Three female security guards working on the front-line of the mundane and the ugly.
The Rainbow Tree | 30 June - 10 July - Where everyone is welcome and anything is possible. Musical storytelling written with children from Rainbow Families.

Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy is a year-round independent performance development program offered at Northcote Town Hall and Darebin Arts Centre.
Now in its eighth year, Speakeasy presents creative contemporary performances by emerging and established artists across Melbourne and beyond.
The Speakeasy program partners with artists and organisations in Australia’s creative sector to generate thrilling artistic experiences, collaborations and possibilities for Darebin's diverse community.
This multi award winning program serves to increase the vibrancy and dynamism of our cultural spaces, enabling an inclusive, empowered community to develop and present creative events.
Speakeasy embraces the idea that our varied cultures, stories and ideas are essential to our sense of belonging, meaning and a rewarding way of life.
