Solace

Selwyn Hoffmann explores original ideas and fascinations through multiple media, primarily sculpture. A member of the Australia Deaf community and fluent in Auslan, Selwyn became artistically re-motivated after settling in Collingwood. This rich, artistic environment inspired him to incorporate his lived experience, as well as ideas around Australian Deaf history, into his art.

"The ocean of lockdown, dark, deep and unknown has impacted on my emotional, to escape the indentations of ocean waves on the flight of the stairs, out of the mist, the peak, to embrace my solace.


"Reach at the cavity, became unwitting visual symbols associated with the Ring of Steel, Hope or Despair, Opportunity or Catastrophe. By collecting the folded cardboard boxes from the bluestone lanes under the dark, to construct the cardboards Skeleton of the island, peel off the ply of cartons for the texture and stain with ageing oils."

Selwyn was the winner of the 2020 Bundoora Homestead Art Centre award at the 2020 Midsumma Australia Post Art Prize. The award included a supported three month exhibition at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, including public programming and professional mentoring opportunities. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Midsumma Festival.
